I recently listened to one of Dr. Oz rants and picked up a few thoughts from what he had to say. A woman in the audience asked the question how can she get more energy? He responded with three simple tricks to improving energy. That being said I can say that Dr. Oz is no genius, and that I do not agree with many of his tactics because while they may work eventually they take way to much time to see results and many people will slack off and not stick with the program.
What does this have to do with swimming workouts? Well one of the tips he had for more energy was to rub ice on your arms in the morning to wake up and to trick the body into using up some fat stores for energy. Basically if you make your body think it needs to keep warm it will utilize stored fat for energy to keep it warm. This idea can be transfered into a good swimming workout when the pool temperature is lower than body temperature. While you are swimming your body is surrounded by cool water, making it use up fat for energy rather than muscle. Combining the temperature with exercise you double the amount of fat you burn. Pretty simple ideology.
Rather than just doing a basic cardio routine where you run miles and burn off both fat and muscle try to work in a good swimming routine 2-3 times per week. While swimming mointor your heart rate every couple minutes and try to keep it between 60-70% of your overall heart rate for maximum fat burn and minimum muscle loss. Hopefully this will work for you as well as it does for myself.
